I feel like when people ask, “What’s up?” or “How are you doing?”, they don’t actually want a full rundown of my life, right? The question itself is so vague that my answers are just as vague. It’s like we, as a society, have collectively agreed that this is just a verbal handshake, a polite exchange, not a real conversation of finding out more about each other.
But in my old-age wisdom (this is real), I’ve realized that, like everything else in life, you get what you put in. Want to really know people? Share more about yourself. Want your loved ones to trust and open up to you? You start first. Show vulnerability, and people will learn they can be vulnerable with you. It’s not the end of the world if and when your friends and family see things differently. After all, aren’t we all uniquely the same?
My “What’s Down?” question is my way of flipping the script. Life might look great on paper (or Insta), but we all have battles and struggles, we’ve just gotten better at hiding them. Maybe because all anyone ever asks is, “What’s up?”
Don’t squint to read my beautiful handwriting, full entry is below in readable text :D
WHAT'S UP?
I got to see Mariah Carey!! It was an amazing experience to hear her perform her songs that I had on repeat in my H.S. years. Kind of amazing how music can bring you back to the same feelings you felt almost 20+ years ago- okay def more than 20 years ago. I'm still riding the High almost a week later. Being able to go + afford with my closest gfs ate what we wanted did what we wanted! I worked hard for this life- and I intend to enjoy it while I can!
WHAT'S DOWN?
Well.... now I just always want to do what I want. I don't want to work my 9-5. I'm trying to find a way out. I need to get out!
Mandatory side note: you see what too much fun does to me? I'm not quitting my job; it pays my bills and my ability to eat and travel. But I love that I felt so great after a trip to feel like that. :)
Hope everyone has someone to share their "What's up and What's down" in life with. If not, drop it in here anonymously, I would love to know!
